At the height of polar summer, day and night become one as the Midnight Sun remains in the sky around the clock. Svalbard comes to life with unexpected flora and incredible fauna. Humpback whales, ringed seals and Atlantic walrus swim through the Arctic waters. Arctic tern, Brünnich’s guillemot and black-legged kittiwake, among other seabirds, fly overhead on your explorations. Breaking through the bright white of glaciers and ice-covered fjords and brown landscapes of tundra are the vibrant yellow and purple marsh saxifrage. Landing in the northernmost settlement of Svalbard, Ny-Ålesund, you may navigate toward the Ossian Sars Nature Reserve, a preservation of mountains and surrounding vegetation that is a sight to behold.

Longyearbyen is in a valley on the shores of the idyllic Adventfjord, surrounded by steep mountains and several glaciers. There are only around 25 miles of roads in this village, which is divided into several neighborhoods, including the town center and Nybyen (New Town), which consists of charming miners’ barracks constructed after the war, as well as guest houses, a restaurant and gallery, and not to mention beautiful views of the landmark mountain, Hiorthfjellet. Be sure to visit the Svalbard museum as a break between the plethora of activities like summer dogsledding or cruising to the abandoned Russian city of Pyramiden

Ny-Ålesund is the northernmost settlement on Svalbard with a population of about 12 people. Here you can find an international scientific research station. Close to the village is a breeding ground for rare geese and arctic terns. Not far from here you may cruise your way toward the Ossian Sars Nature Reserve, a preservation of mountains and surrounding vegetation that is a sight to behold.

Follow in the wake of great explorers like Francis Drake, Captain James Cook and Henry Hudson who attempted to cross the 80th parallel in search of a passageway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The N80° is the circle of latitude that is 80 degrees north of the Earth’s equatorial plane, in the Arctic, intersecting the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, Asia, the Arctic Ocean and North America. Just north of 80° after the point of the crossing you will come to Moffen, a small, low island north of the mouth of Wijdefjorden, on the northern coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago.
