There’s a possibility of coming closer to belugas and narwhals, seals and walruses, caribou and musk oxen with select landings amid Greenland National Park, Eqi Glacier and villages of Greenland. As you enter the kingdom of the polar bear, look for this extraordinary animal, known as pisugtooq, “the eternal wanderers,” by the Inuit, the original inhabitants of Greenland and other Arctic regions. Wildlife abounds throughout the archipelago of Svalbard, such as puffins, reindeer, Arctic terns and foxes. An expert photographer will help you look out for the perfect photo opportunity of these animals, but especially for the elusive polar bear. On Zodiac safaris, keep your eyes on the water for breaching humpbacks, belugas and bowheads. Look out for the Atlantic walrus, ringed seals, harp seals and bearded seals as well.
North Cape
The rugged cliffs of North Cape jut out into the sea and stand out against the backdrop of sky, creating the image of a wide-open horizon that invites exploration. Surrounded by enchanting fjords and starkly barren coastlines alike, it’s a stunning picture. The northernmost town of Norway, Honningsvåg, is one of the most remarkable destinations on Earth. Enjoy the magnificent landscape as you cross the 71st parallel toward North Cape, the nearly vertical seaward edge of the ice cap of the North Pole. Skarsvåg claims the distinction of being the northernmost fishing village in the world. Within the village sits the Christmas and Winter House, a cozy visitors’ attraction where you can experience the holiday year-round with a hot drink and slice of cake as you peruse the local wares and handicrafts and enjoy an atmosphere of dazzling decorations and festive music.
Crossing N80° Moffen
Follow in the wake of great explorers like Francis Drake, Captain James Cook and Henry Hudson who attempted to cross the 80th parallel in search of a passageway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The N80° is the circle of latitude that is 80 degrees north of the Earth’s equatorial plane, in the Arctic, intersecting the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, Asia, the Arctic Ocean and North America. Just north of 80° after the point of the crossing you will come to Moffen, a small, low island north of the mouth of Wijdefjorden, on the northern coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago.
Exploring Villages of Greenland
Even in one of the most isolated regions of the Arctic, there is still the captivating history of a pioneering past. Our expedition leaders, along with the captain and onboard pilot, will determine possible landings each day for all-out explorations. A once-in-a-lifetime adventure is yours to have on the largest island in the world, Greenland. At the very top of the world, it’s renowned for its vast tundra, immense glaciers and deep fjords. From an aerial view, the systems link together like the roots of a massive tree and stretching coastlines are dotted with small islands. Landscapes include enormous icebergs and glaciers. Depending on the time of year, you may see the Northern Lights swirl overhead and polar bears hunt on the ice.
