Explore the Lofoten Islands’ villages, crafts, and textiles, and experience authentic Norwegian life in Finnsnes. Itinerary

From music and museums to quiet forest explorations to charming neighborhoods, Norway’s capital Oslo contains a dynamic array of experiences for every traveler. The city is filled with cutting-edge architecture, among them the iconic Oslo Public Library. As part of its status as a green city, Oslo has become easy to navigate by foot or bike, perfect for intimate explorations. The Historical Museum holds a vast array of artifacts from the Middle Ages and pre-historic times. Among the cities with the most concerts per capita in Europe, Oslo always has an event to immerse into local culture.

The heath and dune landscapes of Skagen inspired many artists in the mid-19th century and you can see these charming paintings in the Skagens Museum. At Grenen Beach, find one of the few unorganized areas of Denmark. The wild beauty of the Kattegat and Skagerrak clashing makes it a striking locale to explore. Just northeast of Skagen in Jutland stands the Skagen Lighthouse. A captivating structure designed by Niels Sigfred Nebelong, it replaced Skagen’s original lighthouse in 1958. It’s a simple construct, but that embodies the nature of Denmark’s culture and invites visitors to take a photo op.

Sitting on the island of Vagsoy, the village of Maloy contains striking beaches of silver sand and a longstanding history of fishing. As a major source of Norway’s beloved seafood, it’s here you will find local favorites such as crab-stuffed sandwiches, cod and chips and fish soup. Once you’ve fueled up on regional cuisine, venture out to the 10-foot-tall Kannesteinen rock. Its unique shape has been compared to a whale fluke or a blooming mushroom, but regardless of what you think it looks like, it leaves an impression. Gather your fellow history buffs for a visit to the Maloy Raid Center, where you will learn about the Allies’ operation that led to a strategic World War II victory. The village’s four lighthouses beckon you to discover stunning scenes, as they each overlook rugged cliffs that plunge into the sea. Steeped in legends of a Viking king, Maloy inspires the imagination and invites you to connect with a piece of the past.

The town serves as your portal to the unblemished natural beauty of Northern Norway. Whether you’re joining a local fisherman for an Arctic adventure or savoring freshly caught seafood at a waterfront eatery, Finnsnes offers an intimate and genuine taste of Norwegian life. Just a short journey from Finnsnes lies Senja Island, often described as Norway’s best-kept secret. This island is a treasure trove of untamed wonder, where fjords carve through dramatic cliffs and lush forests surrender to pristine beaches. This village in North Cape on the island of Magerøya claims the distinction of being the northernmost fishing village in the world. Rolling hills of green, magnificent arctic fjords and an untamed natural beauty make it a stunning stop off the beaten path. Rugged cliffs are home to thousands of cormorants, puffins and gannets. While there are few people who inhabit the village, you are likely to come across wild reindeer that may venture close to town. Ny-Ålesund is the northernmost settlement on Svalbard with a population of about 12 people. Here you can find an international scientific research station. Close to the village is a breeding ground for rare geese and arctic terns. Not far from here you may cruise your way toward the Ossian Sars Nature Reserve, a preservation of mountains and surrounding vegetation that is a sight to behold.

Longyearbyen is in a valley on the shores of the idyllic Adventfjord, surrounded by steep mountains and several glaciers. There are only around 25 miles of roads in this village, which is divided into several neighborhoods, including the town center and Nybyen (New Town), which consists of charming miners’ barracks constructed after the war, as well as guest houses, a restaurant and gallery, and not to mention beautiful views of the landmark mountain, Hiorthfjellet. Be sure to visit the Svalbard museum as a break between the plethora of activities like summer dogsledding or cruising to the abandoned Russian city of Pyramiden
