Global Penguin Society
The Global Penguin Society’s clever acronym, GPS, provides a little hint at what they do. On select expeditions, join a GPS conservationist aboard an Antarctica expedition as they engage you with talks about tracking, monitoring, and informing vital conservation efforts for ensuring the future of the world’s penguin populations. Working in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Network – an organization that supports conservationists who ensure wildlife and people coexist and thrive – GPS’s mission is to protect all 18 species and their ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere by generating sound science, management guidelines and education.

During an insightful presentation, you will take an exciting journey into the fascinating world of penguins. The conservationist from GPS will delve into the global distribution of penguin species, their remarkable evolutionary history and the primary threats they face today. These lectures will dive even further into Antarctic penguins, highlighting their extraordinary adaptations to the harsh, frigid environment, teaching you about their life cycles and key scientific data to understanding these resilient birds.
Throughout the expedition, you will learn more about the Global Penguin Society’s three pillars: science, education, and habitat protection. With this, you will find out how they collect biological and ecological data to monitor penguin populations, track their migrations and assess any threats to conservation efforts. Fostering this culture of safeguarding the wonders of wildlife, this expedition experience is sure to change your life and help you feel a greater connection with your world.
Candela Tisera was born and raised in the city of Puerto Madryn, Chubut, in Argentine Patagonia, so she has had contact with nature and the sea from a young age, which sparked her great admiration and curiosity. She obtained her degree in Biological Sciences from the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco, also in Puerto Madryn, based on a thesis that compiles 15 years of data obtained by the GPS team. She is currently the Research Program Officer at the Global Penguin Society in Argentina. Her work involves monitoring and tracking Magellanic penguin colonies in the ocean using remote equipment, then analyzing the data in collaboration with colleagues. This data is used to analyze the penguins' movements year after year, allowing GPS to measure their overlap with human activities on land and at sea, and to create effective conservation tools.
ABIGAIL SCAVARDA
Abigail Scavarda was born in Baradero, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since she was a child, she has been fascinated by the mysteries of the world around us. With a strong desire to learn more about nature, at the age of 19, she moved to Puerto Madryn, Chubut, Argentina, to study Biology at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco. During her first year of studies, she participated in a penguin census campaign organized by the Global Penguin Society (GPS), which left her amazed by both the experience of working with these animals and the beauty of Argentine Patagonia. That experience showed her the importance of conserving nature, and since then, she has taken part in various projects with this aim. She is currently the Education Program Assistant at GPS in Argentina, where they promote conservation values and environmental care through penguins. One of their most notable educational initiatives includes delivering talks and donating books to schools and to the local community. They also organize visits for schools and community members to penguin colonies.
