John Maclean FRAS FRGS is an astrophysicist, astronomer, researcher, BBC astronomy correspondent and experienced cruise-ship lecturer with a passion for bringing the wonders of the universe to life. A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Royal Geographical Society, John was part of the team awarded the Royal Astronomical Society’s 2022 Group Achievement Award in Geophysics. His interests include the Northern Lights, meteors and meteorites, eclipses, astrophotography and cultural astronomy. At sea, John combines science, exploration, storytelling and spectacular imagery with an entertaining and accessible style, inspiring guests to step outside, look up and discover the remarkable universe above them.

Sandy Primrose

Cultural Expert & Storyteller

Sandy Primrose is a biologist who has a very varied career. This includes being an academic undertaking research, a senior manager in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and diagnostics industries, managing programs for government on detection of food fraud and the safety of genetically modified foods, chairman of various early-stage companies and non-executive director of various government bodies. In his spare time, Sandy is a very keen gardener, and this enables him to indulge in his love of interesting and unusual plants. He lectures extensively on botanical themes including ecology, plants as drugs and sources of foods, and their role in local traditions. Whenever possible, he themes his lectures to the destinations being visited such as the story of whisky in Scotland, the real story of the Irish potato famine, and the story of the tulip in Holland and how that country dominates the world’s floral industry.
