May 02    San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua   Arrive: 10:00AM OVERNIGHT
San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua

A massive statue of Christ overlooks this city, much like the one in Rio, but San Juan del Sur is a place unlike any other. This is the gateway to the biological wonder of Lake Nicaragua. Now freshwater, this lake was part of the sea until an ancient volcanic eruption caused it to become an inland basin. As a result, it is the world’s only lake with oceanic marine animals such as sharks and swordfish. For a taste of saltwater, you will want to head just outside of town to Playa Maderas or Playa Hermosa. These beaches are the cradle of Nicaragua’s surfing culture.
