With seemingly endless places to travel around the globe, it’s tempting to simply hop on the next international flight at the airport, confident that wherever the pilot lands will be an unforgettable destination, brimming with adventure and possibility.
And when the day-to-day hustle gets overwhelming, you may start dreaming of a solo trip — truly getting away from it all — to explore a new place and immerse yourself fully in another culture without distraction.
But narrowing down the perfect destination to travel sans spouse, friends, or family can feel a bit daunting. When the only opinion to factor in is your own, the opportunities are endless. And what if there are cities you would love that haven’t even made it onto your radar?
If you feel that way, you’re not alone. The reason: It might just be written in the stars.
The idea that personality traits are acquired solely based on the month you were born may sound absurd, but the truth is that your astrological sign might actually unveil important elements about you that can aid in finding the perfect solo getaway you crave.
We understand if planning a trip based on the zodiac seems a little hocus-pocus. But we challenge you to keep an open mind, scroll down to see where you should consider heading, and visit Expedia to get to booking.
You might just book a ticket and trust that the four zodiac elements will land you in, well, your element.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)
Hard-working and driven by success, Capricorns can be ambitious to a fault. With so much on their plates, they can at times feel like the weight of the world is on their shoulders. Because Capricorns are a very social group of people, taking a solo trip might feel intimidating — but a spontaneous rendezvous on their own may be exactly what they need to take a break from their penchant for planning.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Head to Paxos, Greece for some much-needed R&R. This island, which measures only seven miles long, holds some of the friendliest strangers around, so a Capricorn will never feel truly alone while walking amongst the thousands of olive trees that speckle the island. Take in the beautiful beaches, bays, and underwater caves, then indulge at one of the many tavernas that are always within sandal-walking distance.
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)
Fiercely independent and always looking for their next challenge, Aquarians live for adventure. Never acknowledging limitations, this astrological sign prefers to live life to the fullest and have fun with the people around them, despite their sometimes aloof demeanor. Planning a solo vacation works very much in an Aquarian’s favor, as they have no qualms about being fully on their own.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of Marrakesh, the heart and soul of Morocco, where a true Aquarius can embrace the chaos of a bustling city. Be prepared to lose yourself in the crowd of travelers weaving their way through souks filled with artisan goods and eye-catching trinkets. Your trip won’t be complete until you visit the Jardin Majorelle, a breathtaking blue villa, gifted to Marrakesh by Yves Saint Laurent, with a garden that preserves a jaw-dropping 300 different plant species.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)
With their heads in the clouds and their hearts on their sleeve, Pisces have a laid-back approach to life. Friendly and intuitive, this astrological sign has a way of constantly giving back without expecting anything in return — which can get quite exhausting. Because of their empathetic nature, Pisces deserve a vacation that is heavy on relaxation and indulgence, to a place where traveling solo means tranquility in its purest form.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Escape to Bali, Indonesia, where natural wonders and tradition combine to create a paradise in its rarest form. The list of Bali’s beaches are endless, but if an “Eat Pray Love” moment is what you wish for, visit Padang Padang beach (it’s where Julia Robert’s met her love interest in the movie). You’ll be greeted with warmth by the Balinese people, and will undoubtedly experience their culture by visiting many of the island’s thousands of temples. Traditional music and performances occur daily, and dining nearly anywhere will be sure to impress.
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Never the ones to sit back and relax, Aries are a driven, motivated bunch who live life with zest and enthusiasm. Their optimism is contagious, and often come across as playful. They are always searching for the next interesting activity or hobby that will surely turn heads. This sign wouldn’t be caught dead relaxing on a beach for a week straight — they want to go where the action is.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Easily one of the coolest cities to visit, Melbourne, Australia has everything an Aries could ask for. Artsy and adventurous, Melbourne is filled to the brim with bars, museums, and hidden restaurants down every block to explore. Be sure to visit Hosier Lane, a cobblestone lane where graffiti is like the coming and going of the ocean’s tides, where street artists create graffiti to cover up its previous décor daily. Upload a shot of it to Instagram, and you’ll be likely to receive dozens of double-taps.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Living a life of certain indulgences but not without constant generosity, Tauruses are compassionate people who love the finer things in life but love to share their fortunes even more. Known for being warm-hearted and personable, this sign will be weary at first of traveling alone — but they may just find a passion for the thrill of a solo experience.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Soak up the sun and indulge in high-class luxury in St. Bart’s, one of the most stylish spots in the Caribbean. With its secluded beaches, like nudist-friendly Saline Beach and more modest St. Jean Beach (which is only for topless sunbathing), this tropical island is often touted as a top destination for the rich and beautiful. The relaxation you will receive here is unmatched, fully maximizing a blissful getaway for anyone who craves it.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
Known for their dual personality, Geminis are one of the most impulsive and restless signs of the zodiac. Because they bore easily, this sign craves spontaneity, and has the true spirit of an adrenaline junkie. Taking a trip by themselves is not scary —in fact, it’s a no-brainer. To feel the rush of life pulsing through their veins, a Gemini wants a destination that in turn pulses with excitement and adventure.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Explore the bustling city of Toronto, Ontario’s buzzing capital, where the daily bustle is surpassed only by its nightlife. Whether you’re getting lost in the Distillery District or walking down Queen Street West, you’ll never run out of things to do or hidden gems to find. Be sure to keep your ears open when walking through the streets by yourself — this multicultural city is home to over 140 different languages.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Deeply nurturing and emotional, Cancers crave support and compassion from the people around them. They have a knack for being intuitive and are incredibly loyal, but can sometimes exhaust themselves by caring too much about the people around them. A solo vacation for this sign won’t mean exploration and adventure, but instead should revolve around getting the TLC that they so often crave (and deserve).
Ideal Solo Vacation: Boracay, Philippines is an island destination that astounds nearly every guest who visits its sliver of paradise. Bask in the sun on the chilled-out Diniwid Beach by day, and by night, be sure not miss Area 51 Secret Party Facility, a club that’s as cool as its name would lead you to believe. A Cancer will leave feeling reinvigorated and refreshed.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)
With the astrological symbol of a lion, it’s no surprise that Leos pursue life with passion, vigor, and a need to feel admired. Often the life of the party, this high-energy sign often exudes confidence. Though taking a vacation solo might not give them the chance to show off to their proverbial mane to friends and family, they can surely impress passers-by with their king-of-the-jungle presence.
Ideal Solo Vacation: What destination is packed with more life and adventure than Reykjavík, Iceland? With a striking landscape of mountains, waterfalls, and brightly-colored buildings, its beauty is sure to take the breath right from your lungs. Filled to the brim with delectable restaurants, art galleries, and a late-night scene that will keep you up until the early hours of the morning, this vacation will be unforgettable. And, if the conditions are perfect and your timing is right, head to the Grótta lighthouse to witness the sky’s most spectacular light show, the Aurora Borealis.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)
Always the steadfast researchers, Virgos prefer logic and analysis over following any sort of intuition. Organization and perfection matter most to this sign, so you won’t find them flying by the seat of their pants with anything that’s important to them — including a vacation. Flying solo won’t be an issue, since Virgos will plan everything ahead of time, often right down to the hour.
Ideal Solo Vacation: You won’t run out of things to do in Antwerp, Belgium. A Virgo’s itinerary will be packed with this charming city’s historical buildings and impressive art scene. Walk down the cobbled streets and admire architecturally mesmerizing buildings such as Grote Markt, which features the Brabo Fountain, and immerse yourself in full Renaissance culture by visiting the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, Belgium’s most beautiful cathedral.
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)
Tranquil in nature and filled with whimsy and charm, Libras enjoy balance in their life, never teetering too close to any specific edge. Because they have a laissez-faire approach to most things, Libras may sometimes struggle with making a concrete decision. With an affinity for the spiritual and the transcendent, it’s important for a Libra’s solo destination to be serene and scenic.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” there’s no spot more beautiful than Dubrovnik, Croatia. The juxtaposition of terracotta villas with the crystal blue ocean will inspire anyone who is fortunate enough to visit. For the grandest views, be sure to hop in a cable car that takes you to the top of Mount Srd. Just when you think this spot couldn’t be any more magnificent, take a walk along the city walls and take in the sublime sights below you — everywhere you look is brimming with history.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)
Resourceful and self-reliant, Scorpios love to take control of whatever situation is at hand. And, while they love a challenge, having the time to de-stress is imperative for their well-being. Striking a balance of blissful downtime and the option to enjoy endless activities is what’s most important for a Scorpio’s solo journey.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Find both yin and yang in Kyoto, Japan. With hundreds of Buddhist temples to explore, Shintō shrines to gaze upon that are both sacred and revered, and mysterious places to like the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove to lose yourself in, a Scorpio will feel centered and restored. As for the “yang” in this equation, make sure to visit Gion, Kyoto’s entertainment district, where you’ll find geishas entertaining guests in endless teahouses and restaurants.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)
With a hunger for learning and a need for exploring, a Sagittarius has a strong desire for thrilling escapades and mental stimulation. Their biggest fear in life is boredom, so this astrological sign won’t think twice about taking a journey to a new destination alone.
Ideal Solo Vacation: Bungee jump, hike, or kayak your way through South Island, New Zealand, where action is seemingly everywhere you turn. Discover wildlife such as whales, dolphins, and penguins at Akaroa Harbour, then quench your thirst for knowledge by visiting the Victorian Precinct. It’s history, beauty, and adventure all rolled into one glorious destination.
